What do you do once you see a compliance problem? How do you force the company to see what you see and focus on solving it?

Published by Yetunde Rotinwa on

There is a side of compliance that rarely gets taught.

It is not just about identifying problems. It is about knowing what to do once you see them.

Over the past year, I have been hands-on in about a dozen compliance projects, interviewed more than 50 senior compliance leaders and secured, directly or indirectly, four licences.

Along the way, I noticed something I had not seen so clearly before.

I met two very experienced Chief Compliance Officers in highly successful companies. From the outside, these businesses looked great. The CCOs genuinely loved their businesses, understood them extremely well and had strong relationships with senior management.

Yet they were struggling to get certain decisions made.

Senior management simply would not make the decision.

These CCOs tried different arguments. They made presentations to the board. They explained the risks. They pushed for action.

Still, nothing moved.

Until there was a crisis.

Then a decision was made, but against their recommendation.

I also worked with one great company that had changed its Head of Compliance three times.

None of them worked out.

This was not a company with careless management. The leadership was responsible, honest and genuinely wanted to do the right thing.

Then there were three Heads of Compliance who had recently joined fast-moving startups.

They loved the CEOs. They loved the energy. They loved the speed.

Then, within weeks, they started seeing things nobody else seemed to notice.

There was no real accountability.

There was too much trust that people would simply do the right thing.

Business assumptions had never been tested.

And that brings me to the question I increasingly focus on in my FinTech Startup Compliance Pro Certification:

What do you do once you see the problem?

How do you get the company to see what you see?

How do you get people to focus on solving the problem before it becomes a crisis?

That is the shift I want to create with this programme.

Not just teaching you how to identify and prioritise compliance issues.

I want to teach you how to turn what you see into better decisions.

How to use risk assessment to separate a real problem from noise.

How to use ROI and financial impact to challenge senior management objectively.

How to restructure the workload of your compliance team around what actually matters.

Because knowing there is a problem is only the beginning.

The real skill is knowing what to do next.

You probably already know a lot

If you have been working in compliance for a while, you probably do not need another programme that simply gives you more information.

You already know a lot.

What you may need is guidance around what to do with what you know.

You may want to:

  • Do more of the work that actually matters
  • Unlock doors and help bring in good customers
  • Make decisions differently
  • Have better conversations with your CEO, board or team
  • Know which battles are worth fighting
  • Put numbers behind your recommendations
  • Make decisions when there is no completely safe option
  • Stop constantly wondering whether you have missed something

That is where the FinTech Startup Compliance Pro Certification comes in.

The programme is designed to help you apply your compliance knowledge to the decisions that shape the business.

What you will learn

The Certification focuses on the practical skills senior compliance professionals need to manage the function and influence the business.

You will learn how to:

✓ Make important decisions without escalating every difficult question to senior management.

✓ Prioritise risks and projects when your team has limited time, money and people.

✓ Explain compliance to CEOs and boards in terms of money, growth, risk and business impact.

✓ Build a business case when you need additional resources.

✓ Develop KPIs that show the performance and value of the compliance function.

✓ Manage difficult stakeholders and internal politics without becoming either aggressive or invisible.

✓ Decide what not to do when the answer is not simply “do everything.”

✓ Identify where the business can take more risk and build a reasoned case for doing so.

Managing regulatory uncertainty

Regulatory uncertainty is part of working in fintech.

The answer is rarely as simple as finding a rule and following it.

The programme covers practical approaches to managing regulatory change, including:

  • Cross-border services and reverse solicitation
  • Geo-expansion strategies
  • DORA implementation
  • Digital Services Act implementation
  • How DSA interacts with GDPR and privacy requirements
  • Preparing for and managing regulatory changes

The focus is on understanding what a regulatory change means for your business and deciding how to respond.

Building the compliance function

You will also work on the systems and planning needed to run a compliance function effectively.

This includes:

  • Annual compliance planning
  • Compliance KPIs
  • Policy frameworks
  • Business-wide risk assessments
  • Product strategy risks
  • Team competency
  • Problematic partnerships
  • Incidents and losses
  • Compliance project management

The risk assessment work goes beyond traditional compliance risks.

You will look at the factors that can affect the business as a whole, including products, people, partners and operational failures.

Improving compliance operations

Compliance processes can create problems of their own.

Poorly configured controls can generate unnecessary alerts, create duplicate work and make onboarding harder for good customers.

The programme includes practical training on configuring compliance tools and controls to reduce false positives and duplicate alerts while improving conversions.

This covers tools and approaches involving solutions such as Sumsub, Sardine, ComplyAdvantage, Elliptic, Chainalysis and velocity rules.

The goal is to help you build controls that manage risk without creating unnecessary friction.

Practical tools you can use

You will also get the practical resources behind the programme, including:

  • 40+ ready-to-use compliance documentation templates
  • Future template updates
  • Risk assessment frameworks
  • Prioritisation frameworks
  • ROI frameworks
  • Decision-making frameworks
  • Project management training for key compliance projects

The programme also includes a bonus training based on experience from four MICA licences that have been granted.

This focuses on practical lessons for preparing and fast-tracking a MICA application.

The final challenge

The programme does not end with simply knowing more.

You will have to apply what you have learned.

The final assignment asks you to identify and justify where your compliance function or company should take more risk.

It is a practical exercise in judgement.

You will need to assess the opportunity, understand the risks, build your case and explain why the business should act.

The real goal

My goal is that you finish this programme behaving differently.

You make decisions faster.

You challenge more intelligently.

You stop automatically choosing the safest possible option.

You become clearer about where your time should go.

And when you see an opportunity or problem that could materially affect the business, you know how to move it forward.

Because the biggest difference between a good compliance professional and a genuinely senior one is not how much regulation they know.

It is judgement.

Knowing what matters.

Knowing what to do.

And having enough confidence to act.

If you are ready to move from simply identifying problems to helping your company make better decisions, the FinTech Startup Compliance Pro Certification is designed for you.
